Deep dive

What is Convert Folder?

Convert Folder turns a mixed folder tree into one chosen output format while keeping the original subfolders intact. Drop a parent folder, choose JPG, PNG, WEBP, or PDF, and download a ZIP with the same structure.

The tool converts supported PDFs and images locally in your browser. Files already in the target format are copied unchanged, and unsupported files are also copied unchanged so a folder export does not silently lose data.

When to use it

  • Convert a client asset folder to WEBP without flattening subfolders.
  • Turn mixed JPG, PNG, WEBP, and HEIC images into one format.
  • Render PDFs in a folder as image pages beside the other converted files.
  • Package a whole folder as a ZIP while keeping files that are already correct.

How to use it safely without uploading

Drop files or a folder, pick the target format, then run the batch. FormatSwitch writes every output to a ZIP using the relative paths your browser provides. No file is uploaded.

Browser-based vs server-based conversion

Most online converters upload your files to their servers, process them there, and then let you download the result. That means your file exists on someone else's computer, often in logs and backups, sometimes indefinitely. FormatSwitch is different: every conversion runs on your device using WebAssembly and the browser's built-in Canvas and PDF engines. Your file never leaves your computer, so there is nothing to leak, nothing to subpoena, and nothing to trust us on — the code that does the work is running right in your tab.

FAQ

Convert Folder — questions people ask

Can I convert a folder without uploading it?
No. Files are processed entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and no copy is kept once you close or refresh the tab.
What happens to files already in the target format?
They are not re-encoded. FormatSwitch copies them into the ZIP at the same folder path so quality and metadata are not changed unnecessarily.
What happens to unsupported files in the folder?
They are copied unchanged and listed in the manifest. This keeps folder exports complete instead of silently dropping files.
Can it convert PDFs inside a folder?
Yes. When the target is JPG, PNG, or WEBP, each PDF page becomes a numbered image file in the same folder.
Does the output ZIP keep subfolders?
Yes. ZIP entries use the original relative folder paths supplied by your browser.
Is it free?
Free, forever, with no signup and no daily limits. FormatSwitch is funded by voluntary donations, not ads or a paid tier.
